My Son was involved in a rear-end accident, the other driver at fault. My Son has insurance “A”, the other driver has insurance “B”. insurance “B’s” adjustor says the truck will take $4500 to fix and will total it. My Son’s insurance adjustor shows up (why I don’t know) and fiqures it will take $3900 to fix, not totaled and insist on taking it to a specific shop. Now my Son’s insurance has sent a check, minus his deductable for $3400. Fortunately, not all of the decisions within the estate planning process are so complicated. When determining the payment of life insurance proceeds, we simply name the beneficiary on the application. It is important that this process be updated from time to time in order to take into account changes in the policy ownerâs needs brought on by divorce, death of a spouse, job changes, etc. Also, it is imperative that a minor not be named as beneficiary, as this will defeat the purpose since minors are unable to receive life insurance proceeds. Because the benefits are payable in this manner (by operation of law), as opposed to payment through the will, the proceeds will not be subject to the cost of probate.
